Lake Plastiras
Greece is not only about sea, sun and fun. If the islands and the magical beaches that are spread all over the country is the main reason for you to visit Greece in summer, then the mountains, the rivers, the lakes and the picturesque villages that are built in those areas is a great reason for a visit throughout the year. Take for instance the Lake Plastiras. This beautiful lake of the region of Karditsa, in Thessaly, is one of the most popular tourist destinations, especially in autumn and in spring -although it is equally attractive in the winter and the summer.

For your info, the lake is artificial and is fed by the Tavropos river. It is named after the Greek general and politician Nikolaos Plastiras, who was the first to visualize the construction of an artificial lake in the area. And to be honest, the lake Plastiras is as beautiful as a vision. Located in an altitude of 450 m., it is surrounded by mountains and lovely picturesque villages, where you can also find plenty of accommodations.

Although the Lake Plastiras was not made only to beautify the area (actually, it is used for irrigation and as a power source of a hydroelectric plant, but also as the main water source to the city of Karditsa), its formation is so unique, its location is so amazing and the activities that  are offered in the area are so many, that it is no wonder why this place attracts thousands of sport and nature lovers annually.

What can you do there? Hiking in the nearby gorgeous forests, 4x4 in accessible dirt roads, cycling around the lake that extends 55 km are some of the activities you can enjoy, if you love sports. If you only love the nature, you can just enjoy the view which is really fabulous. Let alone the picturesque nearby villages, like Neochori, Kalyvia Pezoulas, Neraida and Kastania, to name a few, that also deserve a visit for their beautiful architecture, their churches and their culture.

So, are you ready for an adventure in the Greek nature?

How to get there: By car from Athens (distance 328 km) via A/D Pathe/A1/E75, from Karditsa (distance 25,9 km) via Provincial Road Karditsa-Kastania.
